| The Guidance Program at Saint Joseph School offers a variety of services and programs to the students in K-5. The main focus of the Guidance Program is to provide support and counseling to students. There is individual or group counseling available for emotional, academic or social concerns. Counseling may be appropriate for short term issues, such as adjustment to a new class, making new friends, a family illness or transition. Frequently, some students are seen on a regular basis for emotional support in their daily school lives. Referrals may be made by parents, teachers, or the students themselves. Group counseling generally consists of small, “friendship” groups, changing family groups, new student groups or conflict resolution groups. Working together in a small group setting provides a unique forum for discussing common problems and issues the children share. Group counseling strives to heighten self-esteem, strengthen peer relationships and initiate peer acceptance. The Guidance Counselor also offers the Bully-Proof Program in each classroom. Topics range from the importance of rules, teasing vs. bullying, and practical solutions for dealing with “the bully.” The children have responded most positively to this new program at St. Joseph’s. The counselor also acts as a parent/school liaison with guidance related issues and attends Core Evaluations that have a psychological component. The guidance office assists with the standardized testing program, student record keeping, new registrations and the promotion placement process. Both Middle School and Elementary counselors work closely to insure a smooth transition for fifth grade students as they enter the Middle School. Parents who have concerns about their child should feel free to contact the guidance counselor any time.
